We live in heady times. It seems that the Obamas have a passionate love for each other, and why shouldn't they? Barack is attractive, charismatic, and a seemingly, dedicated father, while Michelle is knock-out gorgeous, as smart as a whip, and she has a big booty too. Not many brothers would turn that down. It is said that people often vote for a president based on who they like the best and I always thought that when people looked at the Cosby-like Obama family, Americans could not help but fall in love with the Ken and Barbie-like couple and their adorable children.

The success of the Obamas has lead many sisters to lament that there are not enough Baracks out there. By that they mean, college-educated, family-oriented brothers who want to settle down with a sister. Now that sounds all well and good, but the answer is a lot more complicated. This can often seem like the best of times and the worst of times for the black family. We have a black president, and black people are serving in the highest ranks of the government. Also black men and women are succeeding in the business and entertainment world. However, we cannot ignore the glaring statistic of 70 percent of black children being born out of wedlock. While we have many high-profile success stories, the two-parent black family is increasingly becoming the rarity not the norm. If Barack Obama was an ordinary brother working a 9-5, he would be one of a few traditional families in the black community.

But while sisters pine for a Barack, in reality most sisters would have passed over the young Barack Obama. I can't think of many sisters who would have dated a skinny, black nerd with an African name. Most people form their opinions of the opposite sex when they are in their early teens and late 20s. And I can guarantee that most black nerds get little play when they are in high school and college. At this stage the sisters are trying to date the most 'exciting,' (read thuggish) brother they can find. Maybe this is not a sister thing, it seems that many women in their early 20s and are trying to rebel by dating the guy who is the complete opposite of what their parents want.

The difference is that white and Asian women often grow out of this quicker. By the time they are in their late 20s and early 30s, prime marriage age, white and Asian women, have moved away from the bad boys and start looking for more stable men, who they can raise children with and split a mortgage payment. Unfortunately sisters face a different scenario, by the time they hit their late 20s and early 30s, they look around and realize that all the drug dealers, rappers and jocks, are not heading down the same path as them. They get tired of being cheated on, discovering out of wedlock babies and being hit up for money. They also discover there is a tiny pool of eligible, level-headed black men. More black women attend college than black men to the point that the ratio is one black man for seven black women on some historically black college campuses. Young brothers are often drawn into dreams of becoming athletes or rappers, or even worse seduced by the quick money of the drug trade, and fall off the path to a white-collar career.

The brothers who do study hard, are branded as nerds and outcasts when they are in their early 20s, and many of them have moved on to women who shared their intellectual interests, who are often Asian, white or Latino. These smart brothers, often still stung by being passed over for the ballers and thugs, are not about to step up and accept second place. If they are still single by the time they hit their 30s, they are making good money, driving nice cars and are eligible bachelors. They have their pick of a wide variety of women of different ages, and races, and they are not about to buy the cow, when their are still plenty of other heifers roaming the fields.

Unfortunately by the time sisters figure out the game, the rules have changed. Michelle Obama seems to be a very shrewd lady, who saw the potential in the young Barack. When they met Obama was a broke, up and coming lawyer who quit a high-powered law job to go and work as a community organizers in Chicago's South Side For many years it was Michelle, a former corporate attorney, who was pulling in the big money. I think Michelle's pragmatism and family values comes from observering her blue-collar parents who were married for many years. Fraser Robinson, Michelle's father, never went to college, but he had a stable city job and went to work every day inspite of his mutiple sceloris. Her mother, Marian, kept the home together while Fraser was out making a living. It seems that the young Michelle learned a lot about how the male-female dymanic works by watching her parents. The Robinsons were one of the many solid, blue-collar black families who thrived in the early part of the 20th century. Somehow these family values were lost to drugs, urban decay, the Sexual Revolution and the 1980s Me generation.

Sadly, many young sisters who are raised in single parent families (which are sometimes all-female) never get to witness this and grow up with no one to pattern their adult relationships on. Some black women, who grew up watching their single moms, work themselves to death raising children alone, swear they will never depend on a man, "because brothers always let them down." They enter relationships already expecting them to fail, which is a recipe for disaster.

It takes a lot of courage to do what Michelle Obama did, follow a man who is chasing his dreams and has not achieved his potential yet. Before sisters say they can't find a Barack, maybe they need to ask how many of them are willing to wait for that broke, skinny nerd to turn into the president of United States.

The main thing that I have to learn is to pace myself over larger distances. I usually tend to ride short and fast rides, kind of like time trial rides. I want to be able to ride really long stages, like about 150 km comfortably in one ride. Today, I plan on heading out and trying for a 70-100 km ride. An RCMP [Royal Canadian Mounted Police] team hunting for the EnCana pipeline bomber in northeastern British Columbia has been accused of harassing and intimidating people in an attempt to get a break in the case.
Several residents of the Dawson Creek area say they have been interrogated up to eight times, pressured to take lie detector tests and asked for DNA and fingerprint samples.
One man said he fled a busy restaurant when police loudly accused him of being the bomber.
The RCMP say they have not received any formal complaints about their tactics.
But Vancouver lawyer, Jason Gratl, vice-president of the B.C. Civil Liberties Association, said he has written to the RCMP asking them to stop harassing two clients.
“They are acting like state or secret police,” Mr. Gratl said. “The RCMP have fomented a climate of paranoia and suspicion … by applying a level of social pressure that amounts to harassment and intimidation.”
The RCMP has more than 250 investigators trying to catch whoever is responsible for six bomb attacks on EnCana infrastructure since October. Police have interviewed more than 450 people so far, without any charges laid.
Mr. Gratl said four people have contacted him with complaints about police.
One of those is Dennis MacLennan, who says he willingly agreed to a police interview last fall, after the first bombings, but when investigators kept returning with more questions, he decided not to co-operate any more.
That, he said, led to a confrontation with members of the Integrated National Security Enforcement Team in a local café.
“They come and sit at my table … and they start engaging me in questions. I said, ‘look I dont want to talk to you, my lawyer has advised me not to … So I get up to leave and one member of the INSET team starts yelling at me: ‘Youre the bomber Youre the bomber You know, in a public restaurant … this is just absolutely atrocious behaviour,” Mr. MacLennan said.
He is in a dispute with EnCana over the amount of money he claims is due for a well on his property, but says that shouldnt make him a bombing suspect.
“I do my business by the rules … Im not some radical crazy,” he said.
But police have kept after him for months.
“They just kept pressuring me and chasing me around town, talking to people Im doing business with and telling them Im under investigation … destroying business opportunities for me. Its been quite stressful … theyve gone to my landlord and said, ‘Would you be surprised if we arrested him? and poisoning the atmosphere with people Ive had relationships with for 10 and 20 years,” he said.
“My friends think there must be something to it if the police are being this persistent. All sorts of rumours are being spread.”
A woman, who asked not to be named, sounded distraught as she described being a police suspect.
“Theyve talked to me three times; our son at least six times. Its interviews, interrogations, wanting fingerprints, DNA, lie detector tests. They wanted my cellphone record … Its two or three hours of questioning at a time, over and over again,” she said.
The woman, who is not one of Mr. Gratls clients, said she knows others who have been questioned by police, and most are withdrawing from social contact.
“I can see some of the same symptoms of [post traumatic stress disorder] in those who have been police targets … there is isolation, paranoia, just like they have been in combat,” she said.
Another woman, who has not been questioned herself, said a friend was interrogated repeatedly and “he was absolutely torn apart by the intimidation. He was a basket case.”
She said she didnt want her name in the media, fearing it might result in a police visit.
RCMP Corporal Dan Moskaluk, media relations officer for the North District, said police would like to hear from anyone who thinks they have been treated unfairly.
“I guess the response to those types of issues [is that] we are always concerned,” he said.
“At this point in time Im not aware of any formal complaints that have been received or are being investigated … but again we would certainly welcome any issues that people would like to voice to us,” he said.

Vision quest preparations involve a time of fasting, the guidance of a tribal Medicine Man and sometimes ingestion of natural entheogens; this quest is undertaken for the first time in the early teenage years. The quest itself is usually a journey alone into the wilderness seeking personal growth and spiritual guidance from the spirit, sometimes Wakan Tanka.
